Heat without Wade again, but win 27th straight
Mar 26, 2013 - 5:16 AM Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Many in Miami may be looking ahead toward Sunday's showdown with the San Antonio Spurs. The Heat, however, still have three road games before their visit to the Alamo, including Monday's tilt with the Orlando Magic.
James had 24 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds and the Heat won their 27th straight game, a 108-94 triumph over Orlando.
"He's so big, he has the ability to survey the floor. When he wants to score, he can score. When he wants to pass, he can do that as well." Orlando head coach Jacque Vaughn said.
Miami is just six wins away from matching the Los Angeles Lakers' record of 33 wins in a row set in 1971-72, but the Heat's amazing stretch was nearly snapped by the Magic on March 6. James, though, came through with a go-ahead layup with 3.2 seconds left as the Heat held on to win 97-96 in Miami.
"Our historic run is about winning championships. That is what we want to be known for. We didn't have a goal in mind to say, 'let's go on a long consecutive win streak,'" James said.
The Heat, who were without Dwyane Wade for a second straight game due to a sore knee, will visit Chicago and New Orleans before Sunday's game with the Spurs.
Miami won its 13th straight road game, which is one off from tying the franchise mark set from Nov. 19-Dec. 29, 1996.
Jameer Nelson had 27 points and 12 assists to lead Orlando, which was without Arron Afflalo and Nikola Vucevic, who average 15.5 and 12.4 points, respectively. The Magic have dropped seven consecutive contests.
A quick 7-0 Magic spurt, capped by a Nelson step-back 3-pointer, tied the game at 68-68 late in the third quarter, but James scored seven points during Miami's 10-0 run to close the frame.
The Magic never seriously threatened again.
The Heat took a 78-68 lead into the fourth and the margin reached its peak at 20 over the final 12 minutes.
Miami has needed to overcome double-digit deficits in each of its last four win, and trailed 34-28 early in the second following back-to-back triples by Moe Harkless and Tobias Harris.
Later in the stanza, Rashard Lewis hit two treys during a 13-0 Miami run against his former team, with his second three concluding the run and making it 50-42 in favor of the Heat.
Miami took a 55-46 edge into the break.
Game Notes
Mario Chalmers tallied 17 points and five assists, while Chris Bosh added 12 points and nine boards for the Heat ... Miami was 15-of-28 from beyond the arc ... Miami's 27 straight wins are more than 10 NBA teams have so far this season.
