Anthony leads Knicks past Magic

Jan 6, 2013 - 5:25 AM Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored 40 points and added six rebounds and six assists as the New York Knicks took a 114-106 win over the Orlando Magic.

J.R. Smith had 18 points and six rebounds, Jason Kidd gave 15 points, eight boards and seven helpers while Tyson Chandler had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who have won their past two.

Jameer Nelson and Arron Afflalo each scored 29 points for the Magic, who have dropped their past eight games. Nikola Vucevic gave 11 points and 18 rebounds in the loss.

Orlando was leading by eight points to start the fourth quarter, but the Knicks chipped away and took a 99-97 advantage on a Smith jumper with just over five minutes to play.

After Afflalo made a free throw, Anthony drained a jumper and Steve Novak hit a free throw after Josh McRoberts was called for a technical foul.

Following a Vucevic layup, Anthony made two straight baskets with the second one giving the team a 106-100 lead with 2:17 remaining. Afflalo countered with two from the line, but Kidd answered with a 3-pointer and New York held on for the win.

Orlando started the game scored 14 of the first 16 points and used that run to take a 36-27 lead into the second quarter.

"The first quarter they came out smoking hot," Anthony said. "They made a lot of shots. The second quarter we buckled down. When it was time to buckle down and win the basketball game, we did."

New York, though, scored 13 straight points in a big second quarter as the team took a 59-55 advantage into the halftime break.

Another big swing, this one a 15-5 run from Orlando, in the third quarter gave the team the lead back as the Magic took an 89-81 edge into the final frame.

"Their ability to get in passing lane, their length, their schemes, it's a reason why they're playing extremely well and they're one of the best teams in the league," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said of the Knicks.
