Grizzlies down Clips, knot series at 2-2
Apr 28, 2013 - 3:10 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - The resurgent Memphis Grizzlies dominated the fourth quarter and behind double-doubles from Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, tied their quarterfinal series at two apiece with a second straight win, a 104-83 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers at FedExForum.Gasol tallied 24 points with 13 rebounds, while Conley scored 15 and dished out 13 assists for Memphis, which broke open a tight ball game by outscoring the Clippers 33-16 in the fourth.
Zach Randolph powered his way to 24 points and nine boards, Tayshaun Prince chipped in 15 points and Tony Allen and Quincy Pondexter each poured in 10 apiece for Memphis, which shot 50.6 percent for the contest.
"We held serve," said Memphis coach Lionel Hollins. "Like I told our guys in there, I said we got to go get a win when the crowd isn't roaring in our ears."
The series will shift back to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Tuesday.
The Clippers were held to 30 percent shooting in the fourth and converted just one of their eight 3-point attempts in the frame. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin each scored 19, with Griffin posting 10 rebounds in the defeat.
Memphis, using its size as an advantage, registered 22 second chance points to the Clippers' two.
Still, Los Angeles stayed within striking distance and trailed just 71-67 after three quarters, but completely fell apart in final frame.
With the Clippers making just two of their first 11 shots in the fourth, the Grizzlies took control.
Pondexter created a nine-point spread with a triple early in the quarter, and Allen and Conley backended a decisive 12-0 run with a three-point play and a triple, respectively, to build a 90-72 edge.
"Obviously the fourth quarter wasn't our best quarter," said Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro. "They beat us up on the glass again, second chance points, it was a four-point game going into the fourth and then we couldn't get anything done offensively."
The Clippers never came close to bringing the margin back to single-digits from there.
Randolph helped the Grizzlies get out to the early lead, scoring 10 in the first. Gasol added a three-point play just over eight minutes in to create a 25-13 Memphis lead and it held an eight-point edge by quarter's end.
Paul, though, got the Clippers in front by halftime, scoring nine of his team's last 11 points of the second, with his last second driving score sending Los Angeles into the break with a 47-46 edge.
Neither team led by more than two for the first nine minutes of the third, but Randolph's second straight bucket gave Memphis a two possession lead with 2:53 to go in the frame. Gasol then added a jumper with 0.2 seconds left in the period to send the Grizzlies into the fourth ahead by four.
