Paul Millsap had 17 points and eight boards for the Hawks, who have won two straight. Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll scored 15 points apiece, with Carroll adding six rebounds.
Ersan Ilyasova tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon Knight added 20 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Bucks, who have lost seven of their last nine. Jeff Adrien and John Henson contributed 12 points apiece coming off the bench.
Milwaukee kicked off the fourth with an 8-2 run to go ahead by five with 9 1/2 left to play. Atlanta chipped away at the lead and a Carroll trey with 7:37 remaining put the Hawks up two, 78-76.
Over the next five minutes there were nine lead changes and four ties. A Korver 3-pointer with 2:15 to play accounted for the final lead change and sparked a 15-8 run for the Hawks to close out the game.
Korver scored 12 of his 15 points in the last six-plus minutes of the contest.
Milwaukee head coach Larry Drew was asked about Korver's hot hand late in the fourth.
"Yeah, yeah that's always a big fear when you play against a guy who can shoot the ball the way he can. I thought we did a really good job on him in the first half," said Drew. "Second half we kind of let him get away from us. A couple of times we weren't able to get the rebound and they got the ball to him with his feet set."
The teams exchanged scores for much of the third quarter before Elton Brand ignited an 11-1 run with four minutes on the clock. The Hawks took their first lead of the second half on the strength of the run and led 68-67 heading into the final frame.
"The first game back from a long road trip is notoriously a trap game," said Korver. "I think we fell for it a bit in the first half. We just didn't come out with the right energy and focus we needed. I know I didn't and coach got on us at halftime and we tried to pick it up."
In the first quarter, with the game tied at 20-apiece, Carroll nailed a 3 to give Atlanta the lead momentarily until the Bucks responded by scoring the final 10 points of the frame.
Atlanta started the second quarter with an 11-5 run to come within 35-34, however, Milwaukee responded with a 12-3 burst which staked them a 10-point lead. The Bucks led 53-47 at the half.
