Leonard leads Spurs past Grizzlies

Apr 7, 2014 - 4:16 AM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kawhi Leonard shot 12-of-13 from the field and matched a career-high with 26 points as the San Antonio Spurs routed the Memphis Grizzlies, 112-92, on Sunday.

Manu Ginobili also scored 26 points for the Spurs, who had their 19-game winning streak snapped last time out with a loss in Oklahoma City. Tim Duncan donated 13 points in the triumph.

San Antonio's magic number to clinch the best record in the NBA is down to three.

Tony Parker left early in the first quarter with back spasms.

"They're going to MRI his back tomorrow," Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said.

James Johnson netted 20 points off the bench and Mike Conley finished with 18 points and six assists for Memphis, losers in four of their last six.

The Grizzlies fell into ninth place in the Western Conference standings, a full game behind Phoenix for the final playoff spot. The Suns took down the Thunder on Sunday.

"We've had to work very hard to get back to where we are right now, to even be in this position," Conley said. "You're going to hit that wall here and there. We have to fight through it just like every other team."

San Antonio's defense was the story in the first quarter, as the reigning Western Conference champs held the Grizzlies to just 10 points on 5-of-22 shooting. Tony Parker, who played just nine minutes before leaving with back spasms, matched the visitors with 10 by himself on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor. The Spurs led 26-10 after one.

The Grizzlies got as close as six late in the second, but Ginobili countered with a 3-pointer and Cory Joseph's jumper restored a double-digit margin. It was 51-38 as the seconds trickled down, and Leonard stepped into a 3-ball and beat the buzzer for a 16-point halftime advantage.

Any hopes of a Memphis comeback went away early in the third quarter, as all five of the Spurs' second-half starters scored during a 17-9 spurt that spanned just over four minutes.

The lead never dipped back into single digits the rest of the way.
