T'Wolves knock off Spurs
Apr 9, 2014 - 4:50 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Ricky Rubio netted 23 points with seven assists to help the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 110-91 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.Kevin Love finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, Corey Brewer had 14 points and Gorgui Dieng posted 12 points with 15 rebounds for Minnesota, which has won three of its last four.
"(Ricky) was under control and was able to get his feet under him and shot it well," said Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman. "He did a nice job of running the team and adjusting to how they were defending him."
San Antonio, which was without Tony Parker because of a back injury, was paced by Boris Diaw and Cory Joseph, who scored 13 points apiece. Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Spurs, who could have clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs with a win and an Oklahoma City loss on Tuesday.
"It's never a good thing to lose a game but sometimes you have to win and sometimes you have to lose," said Diaw. "We wish we played better. We wish we played our game better."
The game was rescheduled from early December when the two teams were to meet in Mexico City, but players and fans in Mexico City arena were evacuated due to smoke from a generator malfunction and the game was postponed.
Diaw made a basket to cut the early deficit to 11-10 just before the midway point of the first quarter. Minnesota then used an 8-0 run the led to a 27-19 lead after one quarter.
The Timberwolves led by 10 when J.J. Barea converted a three-point play with just under five minutes left in the second that jumpstarted a 15-3 quarter- ending run to give the hosts a 54-34 lead at the break.
Dieng's dunk and subsequent free throw helped the Timberwolves to a game-high 28-point lead, 65-37, with just over eight minutes left in the third.
San Antonio cut the deficit to 14 in the fourth but that is as close as it would get.
