76ers pull away in fourth against Hawks
Mar 8, 2015 - 7:52 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Luc Mbah a Moute and Hollis Thompson each scored 19 points as the Philadelphia 76ers topped the Atlanta Hawks 92-84 on Saturday.Nerlens Noel netted 11 points with a career-high 17 rebounds and five steals for the 76ers, who ended a four-game skid. Robert Covington and Isaiah Canaan each scored 12 points.
"I kept thinking I was going to take Hollis out, but he kept making shots," Philadelphia head coach Brett Brown said. "So we kept him in and he had a hell of a game."
Jeff Teague had 17 points and Dennis Schroder tallied 16 off the bench for the Hawks, who rested Kyle Korver, Paul Millsap, DeMarre Carroll and Pero Antic after a 106-97 win over Cleveland on Friday.
Late in the third quarter, the 76ers embarked on a 12-1 burst that was capped on a pair of Thomas Robinson jumpers for a 72-65 lead with 42.9 seconds left in the third, but Schroder's pair of free throws and layup with 0.9 seconds to go made it a 72-69 game heading into the final quarter.
Mike Scott and Shelvin Mack deposited consecutive triples to start the fourth, but Thompson tied the game at 79-79 with one of his own with 6:49 to play.
Canaan made three from the charity stripe and Noel drove through the lane for a layup, giving the 76ers an 87-83 edge with 3:10 to go.
Noel and Kent Bazemore each split a pair of free throws, but Mbah a Moute hit a crucial trey with 1:05 to play to seal the win.
"We were not very good and I thought their defense was really good," said Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. "They made it difficult and we weren't able to convert. I don't think our passing, our spacing was very sharp or crisp."
Scott knocked down two shots from beyond the arc and the Hawks ended the opening frame on a 14-2 run to take a 31-20 lead.
Thompson scored 11 points during the second to help the 76ers whittle the deficit to 53-47 at halftime.
Canaan and Covington hit back-to-back 3s as Philadelphia scored the first eight points of the third to take a 55-53 edge.
