Hornets top Hawks, who rest starters
Mar 29, 2015 - 4:14 AM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kemba Walker scored 21 points, Gerald Henderson had 20 and the Charlotte Hornets rolled to a 115-100 win over the short-handed Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. The Hawks rested most of their starting lineup after clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a win over Miami on Friday.
Mo Williams added 18 points, Marvin Williams scored 17 and P.J. Hairston had 12 for Charlotte.
The Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak and moved into a tie with Indiana for 10th place in the conference, one game behind Boston for the final playoff spot.
They did it one night after losing in double-overtime on the road to Washington.
"Obviously we caught a break with them resting their guys, but you can see we're fatigued and I thought our guys did a great job," said Hornets coach Steve Clifford.
The Hawks rested DeMarre Carroll, Al Horford, Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap in addition to the players who are out with injuries.
Kent Bazemore led the way with 20 points, Dennis Schroder had 17 points and 11 assists, Mike Muscala scored 18 and John Jenkins had 16 points.
"I'm sure it builds their confidence," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said of the extra time some players got. "Everyone knows we have guys who can come in and play. It was great to see them go out and execute."
The Hornets climbed out of an early six-point hole to take a nine-point lead near the end of the first quarter.
They trailed by a point twice in the opening minutes of the second before a 15-3 run gave them an 11-point advantage. The Hawks tied the score later in the quarter but Marvin Williams scored 10 points for the Hornets over the last four minutes to help them take the lead for good.
Charlotte led 57-52 at halftime and stretched a two-point advantage to 12 when Walker and Henderson led a 14-4 burst in the third quarter. The lead was 14 going into the fourth and never dipped below eight the rest of the way.
