Hayward, Jazz rally past Pistons

Nov 10, 2014 - 6:15 AM Auburn Hills, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Gordon Hayward scored 11 of his team- high 17 points in the fourth quarter and the Utah Jazz rallied past the Detroit Pistons, 97-96.

Hayward helped lead the Jazz back from a nine-point deficit in the fourth, however he missed an isolation 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5.9 seconds left, giving the Pistons one last look at the basket.

Out of a timeout, Brandon Jennings took the inbounds pass, blew by Alec Burks and tried a floater, but it was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Derrick Favors had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz while Burks and Enes Kanter added 14 apiece.

Detroit led 91-86 with 5 1/2 minutes left when Hayward got going. He first drew a shooting foul on Caron Butler and made both free throws, then potted a triple from the left wing on a nice feed from rookie Dante Exum late in the shot clock.

Hayward then hit a jumper after Josh Smith's runner in transition. Out of a timeout, Smith made one of two at the stripe and Hayward canned another 3- ball, giving Utah a two-point lead with two minutes to play.

Hayward's first miss of the season from the free throw line came at a crucial time, as he split two with 1:24 to go. Greg Monroe's layup and Hayward's missed 3-pointer gave Detroit the final possession with 4.7 seconds left.

"I'm proud that we battled throughout the game," said Hayward. "It was big win on the road as far as I'm concerned."

Jennings led Detroit with 23 points, but he was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Monroe chipped in 19 points with 11 boards.

"We just got relaxed as a team," said Jennings. "We let teams get back into it."

After a back-and-forth opening quarter, Utah created some separation early in the second, with a pair of reserves doing the heavy lifting. Exum drew a foul shooting a 3-pointer and hit three free throws and fellow Aussie Joe Ingles hit a triple on an assist from Exum to give the Jazz a 33-23 lead.

Ingles hit another three moments later, but Detroit made a game of it late in the half.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a pair of treys 52 seconds apart to tie the game at 50. Kanter restored Utah's lead with a layup, but Smith countered with a long 2-point jumper and the teams were deadlocked at 52-52 after 24 minutes.

Jennings scored eight during an 11-3 run to open the second half. Midway through the third, he hit a pair of 3-pointers around Kanter's jumper, and Andre Drummond finished a putback as Detroit opened up an 11-point lead.

Utah chipped away and got within five, 79-74, heading into the fourth.
