Paul, Clippers win in Memphis
Feb 28, 2015 - 6:41 AM Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Paul scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as he and the Los Angeles Clippers avenged their loss to the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this week with a 97-79 win on Friday.Paul turned the ball over in the closing seconds to seal Memphis' win on Monday, but the All-Star point guard, who also dished out 13 assists, made amends with a stellar fourth-quarter performance.
"Chris Paul dominated the game," Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger said. "They set the tone."
Los Angeles, which had dropped two straight coming in, outscored the Grizzlies in the second half 56-38 and saw five players finish in double figures.
DeAndre Jordan finished with 15 points and 22 rebounds, Jamal Crawford added 19 points off the bench and J.J. Redick netted 18 for the victors.
Zach Randolph led Memphis with 20 points and 10 boards, while Mike Conley scored just four on 2-of-11 shooting in the Grizzlies' second straight loss.
"For the most part, they earned their baskets. We had very few breakdowns defensively," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said.
Both playoff contenders played a Memphis pace in the first quarter, and even though the Clippers sped things up a bit in the second, it was a 41-41 contest entering halftime.
Then the 3-pointers started falling for LA. After hitting just 2-of-14 from long range in the first half, the Clippers drained five from the perimeter in the opening 6:38 of the third. Redick made one on consecutive possessions and Matt Barnes bookended the stretch with 3s, including one that gave the visitors their largest lead at the point at 62-47.
Courtney Lee pulled the Grizzlies back within single digits with back-to-back 3-pointers, but Memphis still trailed 69-62 entering the fourth and missed eight of nine shots to start the frame.
Paul put the game away with 11 points during a three-minute span, as his 3- pointer pushed the Clippers' lead to 86-70 with just over four minutes left.
