Bradley Beal had 12 points, John Wall totaled 11 points with seven assists and Paul Pierce scored 10 for the Wizards, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
"I think my teammates found me a lot. I think I was in the right spots," said Gortat. "(I) tried to be productive, tried to be aggressive (and) a little bit more physical."
New Orleans' Anthony Davis led all scorers with 30 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Jrue Holiday chipped in 17 points on 7-of-18 shooting in the Pelicans' third straight loss.
"We can't worry about this game or the game yesterday," said Davis. "We have to come out and play. Do what we do, defend, and try to get some easy buckets."
Although New Orleans shot just 37 percent from the floor, Davis scored seven straight points with under five minutes left in the fourth to give the Pelicans a 77-76 lead.
Pierce answered at the other end with a layup, then knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:13 remaining to restore the edge.
Beal's tip-in off a Gortat miss gave the Wizards a five-point lead with under a minute left, but Davis countered with a dunk that made it a one-possession game.
Beal missed a jumper at the other end and Ryan Anderson hauled in the rebound to give New Orleans a chance to send it to overtime with 11.5 seconds left.
Out of a timeout, Tyreke Evans' 3 was off the mark and the Washington held on for its sixth straight win in the series.
Gortat scored six points over the opening five minutes of the contest as the Wizards jumped out to a 10-2 lead.
New Orleans answered, however, with a 10-2 run of its own to tie the game at 12-12.
Washington led 23-18 after 12 minutes and brought a 40-36 lead into halftime.
The Wizards had a 65-57 margin at the start of the fourth and Drew Gooden's tip-in gave them a game-high 10-point lead early in the quarter. Anderson and Luke Babbitt nailed back-to-back 3s later in the frame prior to Andre Miller's layup that made it 76-70 just past the midway point of the period.
