Mills leads Spurs rally over Suns

Jan 10, 2015 - 5:40 AM San Antonio, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Patty Mills scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as the San Antonio Spurs got a late spark from their bench to beat the Phoenix Suns 100-95 on Friday night.

Mills and the Spurs reserves scored 30 of the team's 41 points in the fourth quarter, leading them back from 10 points down over the final 12 minutes to cap what was a roller coaster game.

Earlier, the Spurs led by 11 in the first quarter and by as much as 14 points in the second. The Suns used a big run spanning halftime to take a 12-point lead in the third quarter.

Danny Green had 20 points to lead the Spurs and Tim Duncan scored 12, but only four after the first quarter. Cory Joseph added 11 off the bench, including nine in the fourth, and Tiago Splitter had a game-high 14 rebounds in the win.

Eric Bledsoe and P.J. Tucker scored 19 points apiece to lead the Suns, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. It was only their third loss in the last 13 games.

Goran Dragic added 17 points, Gerald Green scored 16 off the bench and Alex Len had 12 rebounds.

The Suns acquired center Brandan Wright from Boston on Friday in exchange for a protected 2015 first-round draft pick. Wright appeared in just eight games for the Celtics after being acquired from Dallas in the Rajon Rondo deal last month.

The Spurs went 3-1 on a four-game homestand, the only loss coming Tuesday when they led Detroit by 18 but were beaten on Brandon Jennings' last-second shot.

They shot better than 59 percent in the fourth quarter against Phoenix and erased a 10-point deficit by outscoring the Suns 17-5 over a six-minute span.

The run was keyed by two 3-pointers by Matt Bonner and one from Mills, who scored five during the flurry. It gave the Spurs a 79-77 lead.

"We were just out there competing," said Joseph. "We buckled down."

Gerald Green knocked down a 3 at the other end to give the Suns their final lead with five minutes remaining, but Joseph hit a pullup jumper after that and scored five in a row for the Spurs, who hung on down the stretch.

The Suns made it easier on them. Tucker and Markieff Morris were both whistled for technical fouls with 1:57 remaining, leading to two Mills free throws that pushed San Antonio's lead to five.

Several Phoenix players, including Morris and Tucker, are among the NBA leaders in technical fouls.

"We're tired (of it)," said Suns coach Jeff Hornacek. "The coaches have talked about it all year. We're just going to take them out whenever they get technicals from now on. It's as simple as that."

The Spurs never trailed in the first half. Duncan scored eight points in the first quarter and the Spurs led by as many as 11.

They led by as many as 14 points twice in the second quarter after an 8-0 run sparked by consecutive 3-pointers from Danny Green.

But the Suns cut their deficit to six by halftime and had an eight-point lead by the middle of the third quarter following an extended 24-3 run spanning the break.

Tucker had 11 points during the surge and Phoenix later went ahead by 12 on Gerald Green's alley-oop dunk from Isaiah Thomas.

The teams combined for 35 turnovers, including 20 by the Suns ... Phoenix will finish a four-game road trip in Memphis on Sunday ... San Antonio starts a three-game road trip on Saturday against Minnesota.
