Gay, Grizzlies take down Kings

Nov 7, 2010 - 7:17 AM Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay finished with 32 points and nine rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies ended their road trip on a high note with a 100-91 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Zach Randolph ended with 20 points and 11 boards for Memphis, which had lost to the Lakers and Golden State to start their trip, and was coming off Friday's double-overtime loss at Phoenix. Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo each scored 14 points in the win.

"We really needed this win," Mayo said. "We wanted to win one going back home for a nice home stretch and take the energy back home."

Tyreke Evans had 30 points, eight boards and five assists for the Kings, who have lost their last two. Francisco Garcia added 21 points off the bench.

"I think we were just playing too fast," Evans said. "They were forcing us off our spots. They were pressuring the wing and we just weren't getting into our offense good enough. So we were rushing instead of just taking our time."

Memphis held a 53-49 edge at halftime and came out hot in the third quarter, scoring the first five points. Then, Mayo's three-pointer with just under 10 minutes left keyed an 11-0 run. Mayo had two additional jumpers during the stretch, which Gay ended with a fadeaway basket for a 69-53 lead.

The Kings scored the next five to minimize the damage, but still faced an 80-67 deficit moving to the fourth.

Several minutes into the final frame, Garcia sank two free throws and followed them with a three to get Sacramento within 83-75. But Memphis had an answer in a Conley jumper, and it continued to provide answers down the stretch, never letting the Kings get too close.

Sacramento had a chance to get within a few possessions after Beno Udrih sank two free throws with 2:51 left. The shots had the Kings within 95-87, and they got the ball back following a Mayo turnover. But DeMarcus Cousins missed two free throws, Randolph got a layup to fall at the other end, and Memphis held on from there.

Randolph scored nine points in the opening quarter to help the Grizzlies take a 30-24 lead. The Kings sank 9-of-17 shots in the second to get within four at the break.
