Sixers get road trip started with win over Knicks

Nov 7, 2010 - 9:53 PM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Elton Brand scored a team-high 20 points and added seven rebounds, and Jrue Holiday finished with 19 points and eight assists, as the Philadelphia 76ers earned a 106-96 win over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Lou Williams had a solid game with 19 points for Philadelphia, which had dropped five of six to open the season, but got its five-game road trip off on the right foot.

Rookie swingman Evan Turner, getting his first career start in place of Andre Iguodala, who missed the contest with a strained right Achilles tendon that ended his streak of 252 consecutive starts, chipped in with 14 points and 10 boards in the win.

"It felt so good," 76ers head coach Doug Collins said about the win. "We had so many guys play well. The only negative was our turnovers in one stretch, but we played through it."

Amare Stoudemire went for a game-best 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who were coming in after posting wins over Chicago and Washington. Toney Douglas had 17 points off the bench.

"We know we're a much better team then what we showed today," Stoudemire said. "Definitely have to give a better effort the next game."

With the Knicks holding an 81-80 advantage after three quarters, things went back-and-forth early in the fourth quarter with neither team able to pull away. Then with New York up 92-90 with 6:46 left, Holiday capped a 12-2 run with a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 102-94 lead with 2:35 to play.

New York went into foul mode and Williams and Turner each drained two from the line to secure the victory.

Behind 12 first quarter points from Brand, the 76ers built a 33-25 lead after the opening 12 minutes.

New York started the second with an 8-0 run and after Douglas hit three free throws, the game was deadlocked at 33-all. However, Williams answered with a three-pointer on the 76ers next trip and they would go up by 10, 49-39, following a Holiday triple with 5:15 to play in the half.

The Knicks would close the period on a 17-5 burst and take a 56-54 edge into the locker room.

New York extended its lead to 69-60 at the midway point of the third quarter before Philadelphia answered with a 20-9 surge. Holiday's three-pointer and driving layup capped the run to put the hosts up 80-78 with 44.7 seconds remaining. Ronny Turiaf would finish off the quarter with a three-point play to put the Knicks in front by one heading into the fourth.

The Sixers snapped a three-game slide against the Knicks....Philadelphia shot 47.4 percent from the field and 7-of-18 from three-point range, while the Knicks made 40 percent of their shots and a woeful 3-of-19 from beyond the arc.
