Mavs, Grizz clash in Memphis

Nov 10, 2010 - 4:12 PM (Sports Network) - Dallas hopes to remain perfect on the road in the young NBA season tonight when they arrive in Memphis to take on the Grizzlies.

The Mavs, who will be attempting to open up 3-0 as the visitor for the first time in eight seasons, snapped a two-game skid on their home floor Monday with a thrilling 89-87 win over Boston. Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and hit the game-winning jumper with 17.9 seconds left in that one.

Nowitzki added seven rebounds for the Mavericks, who moved to 4-2 overall on the season. Jason Terry added 17 points in a reserve role, while Tyson Chandler had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Caron Butler contributed with 11 points in the victory.

Boston missed two chances to go ahead after the clock moved past the one- minute mark, and Nowitzki's contested jumper from the wing over Glen Davis with 17.4 seconds left put Dallas ahead, 89-87.

"Dirk made a couple of spectacular plays to get to the ball in the basket when we really needed it," said Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle. "I am really happy for the team, this is a game that could very easily been given away and it's a big win for us."

Boston's Rajon Rondo was left alone for a wide-open three-pointer on the Celtics' next possession, but he missed the shot with under 10 seconds. Ray Allen grabbed the rebound, however, and was fouled with 1.5 seconds left since Dallas had a foul to give. Kevin Garnett was then forced to hoist up an off- balance shot from deep in the corner, and the ball fell harmlessly to the floor to end the game with the Mavs on top.

The Grizzlies, meanwhile, earned their second straight win during the opener of a three-game homestand on Monday when Zach Randolph recorded the fifth 20-20 game of his career, ending with 23 points and 20 rebounds, and Rudy Gay added 22 points and eight boards, as Memphis topped the Phoenix Suns, 109-99.

O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley each finished with 16 points, and Marc Gasol added 10 points and eight rebounds for Memphis, which will finish its residency against Boston on Nov. 13.

"We got the win and guys played better," Randolph said. "Our guys stepped up and played great. The rookie (Xavier Henry) had a great game and Rudy (Gay) had a great game. Everybody contributed."

The Grizzlies snapped a three-game skid against Dallas with a 91-90 win in Big D back on Oct. 29. Nowitzki hit a go-ahead jumper with 1:10 left in that one but the Mavs never scored again as Memphis ended a nine-game losing streak in Dallas.
