Duncan passes Robinson as Spurs down Jazz

Nov 20, 2010 - 6:43 AM Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Tim Duncan became the Spurs' all-time NBA scoring leader with 19 points, while Tony Parker had 24 points and seven assists to help San Antonio defeat Utah, 94-82, at EnergySolutions Arena.

Duncan, who became the franchise's centerpiece after being selected first overall in the 1997 draft, needed only 13 points to pass David Robinson. Robinson, who played alongside Duncan for his final six seasons, recorded 20,790 points in 987 games for the Spurs. Duncan also played in his 988th game to pass Robinson for the team record, and pulled down 14 rebounds.

"It was a great win for us. It was not particularly pretty, kind of ups and down but great defensively and great to get that kind of milestone behind me," Duncan said. "It means a whole lot. More than anything its a bragging right. I'm going to stick it to him a little bit. He started my career with me. It's been a long career so far. It's just great."

George Gervin is the franchise's all-time scoring leader, including ABA games, with 23,602 points.

Manu Ginobili added 15 points while DeJuan Blair and Richard Jefferson each had 11 for the red-hot Spurs, who have won nine straight to improve to 10-1.

Deron Williams had 23 points for Utah, which had won six of its last seven, including Wednesday's 98-88 victory over New Jersey. Paul Millsap had 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Ginobli hit on a baseline drive to make it a 10-point margin, 91-81 with 2:06 left in the game. He then stole the ball and was fouled during the breakaway chance. He made both free throws to make it 93-81 with 1:55 left to play. San Antonio cruised to the win with a double digit lead the final minutes.

"They did a good job of just executing their stuff and getting stops when they needed them," Jazz guard C.J. Miles said. "They got a lot of offensive rebounds; that really hurt us. But they just do, what veterans do, they close it out."

It took Utah 4:11 to score its first basket of the game, which was a trend for the rest of the game as they never got the lead. The Spurs built a 24-14 margin at the end of the first quarter.

The Jazz fought back during the final 3:42 of the half when they cut the lead to as narrow as three. Raja Bell then hit a three pointer for the Jazz with 9.5 seconds left, making the score 44-40 heading into the half.

During the opening 30 seconds of the second half, Al Jefferson drove down the lane and hit a layup to make the score 44-42.

Duncan hit the momentous mark with two free throws with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. The record-breaking shots were preceded with Duncan's trademark bank shot from eight feet out 15 seconds earlier.

Utah's only threat came late in the quarter when it tied the game at 68 on a Millsap three-point play. Ginobli then hit two free throws to make the score 70-68 heading into the final 12 minutes.

Utah head coach Jerry Sloan missed the game to attend a family funeral...San Antonio outrebounded the Jazz, 46-31...Andrei Kirilenko and Al Jefferson each had 10 points in the loss, while C.J. Miles chipped in with 11 points.
