Hornets resume road trip in LA vs. Clippers
Nov 22, 2010 - 4:08 PM (Sports Network) - The surprising New Orleans Hornets will resume a four-game western road swing Monday against the woeful Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center. The Hornets, who will also visit Utah and Portland on their trek, won the opener in Sacramento last night against the Kings, 75-71, behind 17 points from David West and 16 from Trevor Ariza.
New Orleans improved to 11-1 on the season despite shooting a woeful 32.2 percent from the field. Chris Paul made up for a 2-for-12 effort with 14 assists.
"I think this game tonight really shows what our [modus operandi] is, and that is hanging our hats on the defensive end," Paul said. "We were joking about how bad we shot the ball. We understand that defense is going to win us games."
The Hornets played short-handed with new acquisitions Jarrett Jack, Marcus Banks and David Andersen, who were acquired in a deal that sent Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to Toronto, were not available for the contest. All three players are expected to be on hand tonight.
The Clippers, meanwhile, lost their ninth straight game and fell to an NBA- worst 1-13 in the opener of a three-game homestand on Saturday when Amare Stoudemire tallied 39 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Danilo Gallinari provided 31 points in New York's 124-115 victory over LA at Staples Center.
Blake Griffin set a franchise rookie record with 44 points to go with 15 rebounds and seven assists, one of the few highlights for a Los Angeles team that continues to struggle mightily.
"I made sure I stayed aggressive tonight, but the points mean nothing if you don't get the win," Griffin said.
Eric Gordon added 25 points for the Clippers, who shot 54.4 percent from the floor.
The Clips haven't lost 10 in a row since dropping 12 straight from Dec. 20, 2008-Jan. 14, 2009.
LA, which continues to toil without center Chris Kaman (sprained left ankle) and point guard Baron Davis (sore left knee), will also face Sacramento on its current residency.
