Knicks hold off Bobcats
Nov 24, 2010 - 4:47 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Toney Douglas poured in 22 points off the bench and all five starters scored in double figures as New York held off Charlotte, 110-107, at Madison Square Garden in the first of a home-and-home set.Amare Stoudemire scored 17 points while Raymond Felton supplied 16 points and nine assists against his former team for the Knicks, who have won a season- best four in a row following a six-game slide.
D.J. Augustin scored a game-high 24 points, handed out seven assists and grabbed five boards while Gerald Wallace contributed 20 points for the Bobcats, who have dropped two of three.
Wallace's layup capped a 14-2 surge to start the fourth quarter that drew the visitors to within 91-89 before the Knicks stretched the lead to eight with 3:22 to play in the game.
"We kind of figured they would go on a run," Stoudemire said. "We showed some resilience in the fourth quarter to maintain the lead and win the game."
A Stephen Jackson dunk and three-pointer created by a Wallace blocked shot cut the lead to 104-101 with two minutes to play.
Following a turnover, Wallace's driving layup trimmed the lead to one with 52.3 ticks to go before Stoudemire scored to push the lead to 106-103 with 37 seconds remaining.
Jackson's running hook made it a one-point game again prior to Danilo Gallinari making a pair from the line to make it 108-105 with 15 ticks left.
Again, Jackson got to the rim but his shot was blocked. Wallace got the loose ball and laid it in with 3.6 seconds to play to cut the lead to 108-107.
Two Felton free throws restored a three-point cushion with 2.1 seconds to go before Jackson's desperation heave was off the mark to end the game.
"I was pleased the way we got back in the game," Charlotte head coach Larry Brown said. "We had some pretty bad possessions late, which, if you get behind you have to play perfectly at the end. The effort was great, they competed, I'm excited about it but we had some unforced turnovers and we missed some point blank shots that we needed."
Charlotte never got closer than 10 during the third quarter and trailed by as many as 16 before heading into the final quarter down 89-75.
The Knicks shot a sizzling 60 percent (12-of-20) in the first quarter to take a 32-26 lead. A Landry Fields dunk and three-pointer ignited a 12-2 run that turned a three-point deficit into a 20-13 lead for the hosts with 3:44 to go in the period.
The Knicks stretched their lead to 60-49 at the break behind 13 points from Douglas and 11 more from Stoudemire.
