Hornets make a stop in Utah

Nov 24, 2010 - 3:54 PM (Sports Network) - The New Orleans Hornets hope to get back on the winning track Wednesday when they resume a four-game western road swing against the Utah Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.

The Hornets fell to 1-1 on their trip and suffered their worst loss of the season on Monday against the lowly Clippers in Los Angeles. Eric Gordon scored 27 points and hit two game-sealing free throws with 4.7 seconds left in that one, as the Clips snapped a lengthy losing streak to New Orleans with a 99-95 victory at Staples Center.

Blake Griffin added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Clippers, who ended a 14-game skid to the Hornets. The previous Los Angeles win against New Orleans came on January 8, 2007, when the Hornets were displaced to Oklahoma City due to Hurricane Katrina.

David West scored 30 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who lost for just the second time in 13 games this season. Chris Paul had 14 points and six assists, and Marco Belinelli posted 14 points as well.

"They were aggressive. They manhandled us," said Hornets head coach Monty Williams. "We didn't play with a sense of urgency. They beat us."

New Orleans played its first game with new acquisitions Jarrett Jack, Marcus Banks and David Anderson, all of whom were picked up in a trade with Toronto. Jack was the only one of the three who played, and he scored 12 points.

The Jazz, meanwhile, welcomed back head coach Jerry Sloan, who had missed the team's previous two games while attending a family member's funeral, with a 94-83 win over Sacramento on Monday. C.J. Miles scored 20 points in a little under 24 minutes in that one to spark Utah.

Al Jefferson added 19 points and eight rebounds while Deron Williams chipped in 12 points and nine assists for Utah, which outscored the Kings by 24 points over the middle two quarters en route to a second straight win overall.

"Obviously, a win is a win," Sloan said. "I thought our second group came in and gave us some life in the first half, and it seemed like they ran the floor much better. We had a difficult time trying to get going, our execution in the first part of the game wasn't that much. Our second group, I thought, executed and got some decent shots."

Utah has won seven of its last eight home meetings with New Orleans and finished 3-1 against the Hornets last year but Paul missed all of those losses due to injury.
