Celtics shoot for 5th straight win against reeling Blazers
Dec 1, 2010 - 4:07 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Celtics will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they welcome the struggling Portland Trail Blazers to TD Garden tonight.Boston will also host Chicago and is 7-1 in Beantown this season. It is coming off Tuesday's 106-87 victory at Cleveland thanks to a season-high 23 points and 12 assists from All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo. Marquis Daniels was a boost off the bench with a season-best 16 points and Glen Davis provided 17 points and 11 boards for the Celtics, who had a 60-26 advantage in the paint.
"Last time we played here, I totally think we underestimated this team," said Boston center Kevin Garnett, who had 11 points and 10 boards. "It's the post- LeBron era, so, honestly, you didn't know how they were going to play. Tonight, we knew what to look forward to, that they are a hard-working team for all 48 minutes."
Shaquille O'Neal made news by pulling down seven boards to become the 13th player in NBA history to surpass 13,000 rebounds. He now has 13,005.
Portland has lost four in a row and fell to 0-2 on a four-game road trip with last night's 88-79 setback in Philadelphia.
Wesley Matthews pumped in a game-best 26 points and has been a big bright spot since All-Star Brandon Roy has been bothered by knee troubles. Matthews is averaging 20.2 points over the past six games for Portland, which got 20 points and 12 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge and scored only 11 points in the fourth quarter.
"We are getting open looks, and we are not knocking down shots," said Portland head coach Nate McMillan. "If you don't score in this league, it is going to be tough to win. We got to put the ball in the hole."
Roy was averaging 24.0 points in his previous two games before posting 10 against the Sixers. The Trail Blazers made 37 percent of their shots and will close out the east coast trek at Washington on Friday.
Boston won both games with Portland a year ago and is 11-4 in the past 15 meetings between the teams. The Blazers are winless in their last six contests at the Celtics.
