Rockets and Grizzlies collide in Memphis
Dec 3, 2010 - 3:47 PM (Sports Network) - The Houston Rockets aim for their sixth straight win over the Memphis Grizzlies when the two clubs collide this evening at FedEx Forum. The Rockets have won 13 of the past 16 meetings with Memphis. These two teams have split the previous six encounters in the Volunteer State.
Houston has alternated wins and losses over its last six games overall and is coming off Wednesday's 109-99 victory at home over the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Trailing 91-84 with 7:02 left to play, Houston went on a 16-6 run to take the lead for good.
Shane Battier recorded 17 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, six boards and two blocked shots for the Rockets, who outscored the Lakers by a 33-21 count in the final stanza. Kevin Martin led Houston with 22 points, while Louis Scola added 14 to send LA to its fourth straight loss.
"I think people are going to make a lot of (Los Angeles') losing streak," Battier said. "We went through it. Every team, I don't care how good you are, you go through lulls in the season. They're too talented -- I would expect them to go on a winning streak very soon."
Houston is still playing without center Yao Ming (ankle) and guard Aaron Brooks (ankle). Both players are out indefinitely. The Rockets have lost four straight on the road and are 2-8 as the visitor this season.
Memphis has lost two of three games since a three-game winning streak and sustained a 112-109 setback in Atlanta on Wednesday.
Rudy Gay had 23 points to pace the Grizzlies, while Mike Conley contributed 22 and nine assists. Zach Randolph added 19 points and 19 boards for the Grizzlies, who will put their four-game home winning streak on the line Friday night.
"We started the game pretty good but then we sagged in the second quarter and you can't do that with a team like Atlanta," Grizzlies center Marc Gasol said. "They have All-Star players and they know how to execute."
Gasol did his best with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
