Jackson leads Bobcats to OT win over Nets

Dec 4, 2010 - 5:42 AM Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Stephen Jackson returned from a one-game suspension and posted 25 points, six assists and five rebounds, and the Bobcats outlasted the Nets in overtime, 91-84, at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Charlotte used solid defense to make up for its own shooting woes, holding New Jersey to 31.9 percent from the field -- including a 2-for-12 effort in the extra session.

"It was an ugly win, but it was still a win," Jackson said. "Our defense was superb."

Three Bobcats finished with double-doubles in points and rebounds, as Boris Diaw had 11 and 16, Nazr Mohammed went for 14 and 11 and Gerald Wallace added 12 and 13 in the win.

Travis Outlaw and Anthony Morrow netted 21 and 19 points, respectively, for New Jersey, which was coming off a three-overtime loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The Bobcats owned a 60-48 lead heading to the fourth, and the margin moved to 16 before New Jersey scored 12 straight points -- five by Brook Lopez -- to get back in the game.

It remained at least a two-possession game until Morrow drained a baseline jumper in the final minute to pull New Jersey within 77-74.

Jackson made two free throws with 23.3 seconds left, and Jordan Farmar sank a three-pointer at the other end for a two-point game, 79-77.

Wallace played a big part in sending the game to overtime, missing two free throws with 11.7 ticks to go. The Bobcats caught a break when Lopez knocked the carom of the second miss out of bounds, but Wallace fouled Morrow as both went up for the ensuing inbounds pass at the top of the key.

Morrow made both freebies with 9.2 seconds to go, and D.J. Augustin's fadeaway at the right elbow fell off the mark at the buzzer.

Charlotte's Tyrus Thomas opened the OT scoring with a jumper, and the Nets missed their first 10 shots from the field in the extra session.

Wallace's layup in transition and another Thomas bucket down the stretch extended the lead to 85-80, and Jackson sealed the win with two at the foul line with 31.1 seconds showing.

"In overtime we didn't run our offense properly and it affected our defense," Nets head coach Avery Johnson said.

Both teams came in on the losing end in four of their previous fives games, and their struggles showed in an ugly first half.

The Bobcats crawled to an 18-16 lead in an uneventful opening 12 minutes, and both squads made just four field goals in the second stanza, which ended with Charlotte holding a slim 33-32 lead.

Whatever Larry Brown hold his team in the locker room worked, as Charlotte ripped off 10 of the first 12 points in the third quarter, culminating in Jackson's spot-up jumper for a 43-34 advantage.

Jackson was suspended one game after verbally abusing an official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection from Saturday's loss at Milwaukee...Diaw set a career-high in rebounds and also handed out eight assists...Augustin and Thomas scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, for the Bobcats, who made 36.0 percent of their shots...Nets point guard Devin Harris missed his second consecutive game with a knee sprain. Farmar started in his place and chipped in 16 points and 10 assists...Lopez logged 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting...Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith was in attendance. The Virginia Tech product was in town for Saturday's ACC Championship game between the Hokies and the Florida State Seminoles.
