Gay, Randolph push Grizzlies past Suns in OT

Dec 9, 2010 - 6:17 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay hit a buzzer-beating three in regulation, Zach Randolph scored four of his 34 points in overtime and the Memphis Grizzlies snapped a four-game losing streak with a 104-98 win over Phoenix.

Gay hit a three-pointer from the left corner as time ran out, tying the game at 92, and Memphis outscored the Suns 12-6 in overtime to win for the first time this month.

"That was a hard-fought, much-needed win," said Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins.

Goran Dragic scored 17 points to lead Phoenix and fellow bench player Hedo Turkoglu added 15, including a three-pointer with 6.2 seconds left in regulation that gave Phoenix a 91-88 lead.

The Suns lost their second in a row on the heels of a three-game winning streak, opening a three-game homestand with a dreadful performance from their starters.

Steve Nash, Jason Richardson, Earl Barron, Channing Frye and Grant Hill were just 14-of-43 from the field for 40 points -- Nash and Richardson average about that by themselves -- and Phoenix trailed by as many as 15 points.

The Suns were down by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, but still they came back to take the lead.

Turkoglu's three-pointer at 2:48 tied the game at 86-86. But it wasn't even his biggest shot.

He hit another three over the outstretched arm of Randolph from the top of the key to make it 91-88 with 6.2 seconds left -- Phoenix's first lead of the second half.

Mike Conley made one of his two foul shots at the other end to pull Memphis within two, and Frye also went 1-for-2 for Phoenix to set the stage for Gay's buzzer-beater.

On a well-designed play, the Memphis forward slashed to the left corner, spun and hit the shot as time ran out to tie the game. Gay broke free on a screen set by Randolph.

"We all know Zach can rebound and score but there are other things we've been working on with him and when we needed him to set a great screen, he did it," said Gay. "That's a winner and that's what we want around here, winners."

Turkoglu's 21-footer opened the scoring in overtime, but it was the only lead Phoenix held. Randolph's last points came on a short jumper to make it 102-98 with 6.7 seconds left, and Nash missed a three-pointer at the other end to all but give the Grizzlies the win.

Memphis had a 25-22 lead after the first quarter and ended the half on a 12-1 run to take a 53-41 advantage into the locker room.

The Grizzlies led by as many as 15 in the third quarter when Darrell Arthur's jumper made it 70-55 and they carried a 78-64 lead into the fourth. But they scored just 14 points in the next 12 minutes -- a fourth-quarter low for a Suns opponent this season.
