Sharp-shooting Jazz down Magic
Dec 11, 2010 - 5:53 AM Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Deron Williams scored half of his 32 points in the pivotal third quarter and dished out nine assists, and Utah thrived from beyond the arc in a 117-105 victory over the Orlando Magic.C.J. Miles added 26 points and Paul Millsap tallied 22 for the Jazz, who bounced back from a 13-point home loss to Miami on Wednesday. The Jazz went 10-of-16 from three-point range, with Miles and Williams combining for an 8- for-13 effort from long distance. Andrei Kirilenko had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Al Jefferson ended with 16 points.
"We were a little down after we dropped one at home against Miami," Millsap said. "We came into tonight with a chip on our shoulder trying to show everybody that we can compete in this league."
Jameer Nelson led six Orlando players in double figures with 19 points and 10 assists, but the Magic were swept in the season series by the Jazz for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Dwight Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
"They did a good job on Dwight, they did a very good job on blocking shots on him and getting turnovers," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That's a double edge sword as a coach you're looking at your team, clearly their defense got better. But we didn't play very well."
A three-point play by Miles widened the gap to 98-81 with seven minutes remaining, but the Magic rallied behind three-balls from Nelson and Vince Carter, and an alley-oop jam from Howard.
The problem for Orlando was Utah was deadly from long distance, going 5-of-7 in the final quarter.
Nelson's three-ball cut the deficit to 109-102 with 2:45 left, but Kirilenko canned a jumper and he jammed off a Millsap steal to essentially seal the win.
Orlando led 31-30 after one quarter, but Utah shot 11-of-18 from the field in the second and grabbed a 58-57 edge after 24 minutes.
It was a back-and-forth contest for the early section of the third quarter, but the Jazz were able to pull away thanks to limiting the Magic to 6-of-19 shooting in the period. Meanwhile, Williams went 3-of-5 from long distance.
Brandon Bass hit two from the charity stripe, drawing the visitors within 71-67 at the midway point of the third. Then came an 11-2 Utah spurt, capped by a three-ball from Kirilenko with 2:48 left. It was 82-72 going to the fourth.
