Mayo, Grizzlies smother Charlotte

Dec 16, 2010 - 6:23 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - O.J. Mayo scored a game-high 24 points off the bench and the Memphis Grizzlies won their fourth straight contest, topping Charlotte 113-80 at FedExForum.

Rudy Gay scored 23 and Zach Randolph added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who are now 11-4 when holding opponents under 100 points. Darrell Arthur added 10 points in a reserve role for Memphis.

Stephen Jackson scored 16 for Charlotte, which is now 3-10 on the road this season. Tyrus Thomas added 12 points and both Boris Diaw and D.J. Augustin finished with 10 in the loss.

"We were selfish on both ends and we didn't play hard. We acted like we didn't care," Bobcats head coach Larry Brown said.

Charlotte was without forward Gerald Wallace, who suffered a sprained ankle in Tuesday's 97-91 victory over Toronto. Wallace is averaging 16.7 points and over eight rebounds a contest.

Memphis held a 24-20 lead after the opening 12 minutes.

The Grizzlies opened up the second on a 19-5 run, which was capped when Randolph connected on two from the line just inside five minutes, and his tip shot with 2:15 remaining made it a 51-31 game. The Grizzlies had a 59-36 margin heading to the locker room.

Memphis' lead reached 30, 84-54, on an Arthur bank-shot in the final minute of the third, and the Grizzlies took an 84-55 lead into the final stanza.

The Grizzlies eclipsed the century mark with 6:25 remaining when Gay connected with Arthur on a powering alley oop dunk that all but closed the book on the Bobcats. The Memphis lead reached as high as 35 in the final minutes.

"We put them away in the second half. We didn't put ourselves in the hole this time," Gay said.
