Rockets finish 2010 slate with win over Raptors
Jan 1, 2011 - 8:11 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Chase Budinger led a balanced attack with 22 points and Kevin Martin added 20 as Houston closed out 2010 with a 114-105 victory over Toronto at Toyota Center.Rookie Patrick Patterson notched his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Luis Scola contributed 13 points and seven boards for the Rockets, who bounced back from Wednesday's loss to Miami and have won six of seven overall.
DeMar DeRozan made 12-of-21 shots from the floor and 13-of-14 from the foul line en route to a career-high 37 points for the Raptors, who have lost four of five.
"I just wanted to be aggressive," DeRozan said. "(The Rockets) were playing tough with us. I just took the opportunity to play hard with them."
Linas Kleiza scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, and Amir Johnson added 14 points and 11 boards in defeat.
Leandro Barbosa scored 10 points in the first quarter to help the Raptors take a 34-20 lead.
Budinger added 13 points in the second while playing all 12 minutes, and Houston shot 64.3 percent in the period en route to a 62-55 halftime lead.
"Our whole bench stepped up," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "Chase has been playing better. He's playing with more confidence and that helps."
Toronto fought back in the third, and after a Barbosa layup with 2:10 remaining, the Houston lead was down to 78-75. However, a Martin open court slam at the other end ignited a 6-0 run the Rockets used to end the quarter.
Budinger connected on a pullup jumper inside the final minute, then blocked Julian Wright's reverse layup attempt. Budinger sent a long inbound to Patterson, who ended the spurt with a short jumper, giving Houston a 84-75 lead entering the final stanza.
Budinger's layup with under four minutes left widened the Rockets' lead to a game-high 16, but an 8-0 run for Toronto -- seven coming from DeRozan -- cut the Raptors' deficit to 107-99 with 2:24 remaining.
Aaron Brooks then connected on a technical free throw, and after Kyle Lowry's floating jumper with 1:40 remaining, Houston was back up double-digits.
The Rockets' lead never fell below seven down the stretch.
