Grizzlies wrap up road trip in Hollywood vs. Lakers
Jan 2, 2011 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Memphis Grizzlies will finish up a three-game western road trip tonight when they visit the two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. The Grizzlies fell to 0-2 on the trek Saturday in Salt Lake City when Paul Millsap led a balanced Jazz attack with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Utah topped Memphis, 98-92.
Zach Randolph led the Grizzlies with a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds. O.J. Mayo scored 18 and Mike Conley added 17 points and seven assists for Memphis, which played without leading scorer Rudy Gay and fell to 5-13 as the visitor on the year.
This was the second close game the Grizzlies lost on the trip as they fell 100-98 to Sacramento on Wednesday thanks to Tyreke Evans' beyond midcourt buzzer beater.
"We didn't make enough plays," Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were getting stops and then we were turning the ball over. We just didn't get it done."
Gay, who is averaging 20.7 points per game, sat out Saturday with a stomach virus and will be a game-time decision tonight.
The Lakers, meanwhile, won their second in a row after an uncharacteristic three-game skid on Friday when Kobe Bryant hit the deciding jumper with 1:15 remaining and sank two free throws in the final seconds, as Los Angeles edged the Philadelphia 76ers, 102-98.
Bryant finished with a game-high 33 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Pau Gasol added 20 points and Andrew Bynum grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to go with eight points for the Lakers.
Lamar Odom added 18 points and seven rebounds in a reserve role for LA.
"[Philadelphia] found a way to get back into the game," Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. "We made too many mistakes and they capitalized on them."
LA has won seven of the last nine meetings against Memphis, including four straight at Staples Center. The two teams have split a pair of meetings so far this season with each holding serve on its home floor.
