Lakers hold Cavs to 57 points in record-setting game

Jan 12, 2011 - 6:29 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Pau Gasol led a balanced attack with 13 points and 14 rebounds, as the Los Angeles Lakers used suffocating defense in a record-setting 112-57 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Lakers set a franchise regular-season record for fewest points scored by an opponent in a game. The previous mark was set on March 12, 2002, when Los Angeles held Charlotte to 66 points.

Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum each had 15 points for the Lakers, whose 55-point margin of victory proved to be the third-largest in Los Angeles history. Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Shannon Brown chipped in with 13 points apiece.

"I don't know what to say. Our size was a dominant factor," Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. "The Cavs are playing with a lot of their regulars out. They gave us an effort, but we were there to meet them."

Alonzo Gee finished with 12 points and eight rebounds to pace the Cavaliers, who set a franchise-low for points in a game. The previous record was 59 points, set March 25, 1997 against San Antonio.

Ramon Sessions added 10 points for the Cavs, who have lost 17 in a row on the road. Cleveland, which shot 29.9 percent from the field, has also lost 11 in a row overall.

"I thought that was embarrassing," Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott said. "I thought our guys looked scared. We didn't compete."

The Lakers started the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back. Derek Fisher scored eight of his 10 points in the first quarter to help the Lakers build a 27-12 lead.

Gasol led Los Angeles with nine points in the second period, as the home team took a commanding 57-25 advantage into the locker room. The Cavs shot just 26.3 percent from the field in the first half.

Bryant scored 11 of the Lakers' 35 points in the third stanza. Los Angeles shot 70 percent from the floor in the quarter to take a 92-41 lead into the fourth.

The lead reached as high as 56 in the fourth.

Game Notes

The Cavs swept the home-and-home series with the Lakers a year ago and have won seven of the past 10 games in the series...Cleveland's current road losing streak is its longest since a franchise-record 21-game hiccup to close out the 2002-03 season...The Cavaliers have lost 11 in a row for the first time since a 15-game slide from November 8-December 2, 2002...The Lakers made 53.5 percent of their shots...Los Angeles went 10-of-20 from three-point range.
