Spurs and Mavs renew rivalry in the Alamo City

Jan 14, 2011 - 8:45 PM (Sports Network) - Not too many opposing teams come out of the Alamo City on a winning note and the San Antonio Spurs will try to keep it that way tonight when they renew their rivalry with the Dallas Mavericks at the AT&T Center.

The Spurs have won 13 in a row at home and are 20-2 as the host this season. They will begin a four-game residency Friday versus the Mavericks, Nuggets, Raptors and Knicks.

San Antonio has won four in a row overall and is coming off Wednesday's 91-84 victory in Milwaukee behind Manu Ginobili's 23 points and seven rebounds. Matt Bonner netted 17 points off the bench and Tim Duncan added 16 and eight rebounds for the Spurs, who are 8-2 in their last 10 games.

"We have guys do that every night. Everybody on the team has contributed at some point in the season," Bonner said. "We needed a shot in the arm in the second half offensively and I was able to come in and make some shots."

Tony Parker was credited with eight points and nine assists, as the Spurs improved to an NBA-best 33-6 on the season.

Dallas has lost three straight and fell to 2-6 without star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who has missed eight games with a right knee injury suffered in a win over Oklahoma City on Dec. 27. Nowitzki is still day-to-day and the eight- game absence is the longest of his 12-year career.

The Mavericks opened a four-game road trip with Wednesday's 102-89 loss against the Indiana Pacers, as Jason Terry led the way with 18 points and both Tyson Chandler and Jason Kidd both finished with 13.

"We couldn't make shots when we needed, and on the other side we couldn't get stops when we needed," Kidd said. "[The Pacers] moved the ball and they got big scores when they needed them."

Shawn Marion added 12 points and seven rebounds for Dallas, which is 12-3 away from Big D this season and will also visit Memphis and Detroit on the trip.

So far the Spurs and Mavericks have split two meetings this season, while Dallas has won four of the last five between the Southwest Division foes. These two teams have split the last 16 meetings at San Antonio.
