Mavs, Knicks square off at MSG
Feb 2, 2011 - 4:45 PM (Sports Network) - The Dallas Mavericks kick off a three-game road trip tonight in search of their sixth straight win when they face off with the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The Mavs are coming off a perfect 4-0 homestand, culminating with Monday's 102-92 triumph over lowly Washington. Dirk Nowitzki scored an efficient 24 points while Tyson Chandler supplied 18 points and 18 rebounds in that one for Dallas.
Shawn Marion contributed 14 points and nine boards while Jason Terry provided 14 points and eight assists for the Mavericks, who have won six out of their last seven overall.
"It was a good homestand," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle told the Mavericks' website. "We accomplished our goal. We wanted to win all of the games. None of them were easy and we knew that they would not be."
The Knicks, meanwhile, opened a brief two-game residency on Sunday with a 124-106 rout of Detroit behind Amare Stoudemire's 33 points.
Danilo Gallinari recorded 29 points and Timofey Mozgov notched career-highs with 23 points with 14 rebounds in a reserve role for the Knicks, who have won three of four overall following a six-game skid.
"He played great. He's one of those players who keeps working and keeps trying to improve," Stoudemire, who played despite a balky knee, said of Mozgov. "He's a young player. Coach said I did a great job with him, keeping him in shape and keeping him enthused. He played well tonight."
The Knicks played their second straight game without starting forward Wilson Chandler (sore left calf) against the Pistons but he is likely to return tonight. Former Maverick Shawne Williams, meanwhile, is also eligible to return after being suspended one game for throwing a punch at Marvin Williams in Atlanta last Friday night.
The Knicks snapped an eight-game skid against the Mavs last season but have lost four straight to Dallas at MSG, where Nowitzki has averaged nearly 30 points in his last nine visits.
