McDyess' tip-in lifts Spurs over Lakers

Feb 4, 2011 - 8:05 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Antonio McDyess' left hand was in the right place.

McDyess tipped in a missed Tim Duncan jumper at the buzzer, lifting the San Antonio Spurs to an 89-88 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.

After Manu Ginobili missed a wide-open three-pointer and Tony Parker's floater in the lane went in and out, the Spurs got the ball back on an inbounds pass.

Duncan's shot near the right elbow clanked off the rim and McDyess stretched out to tap it in -- elevating over Lamar Odom and avoiding a swipe by Kobe Bryant.

"They got a great bounce. So be it," said Bryant.

The ball dropped in just as the red light around the backboard came on, giving the Spurs a bounce-back win after they kicked off their nine-game "rodeo road trip" with a loss in Portland on Tuesday.

"I happened to be in the right place at the right time and it bounced right to me," said McDyess.

Parker scored 21 points, Richard Jefferson added 18 and Ginobili had 14 to lead the Spurs. Duncan scored just eight, but had a key bucket that gave San Antonio a four-point lead inside two minutes.

The Lakers surged back, with Odom burying a three-pointer to get them within one and Pau Gasol hitting two free throws with 22.7 seconds left for the lead.

But the Spurs had possession for the rest of the game. McDyess, before his game-winner, kept the ball alive with a tap-out rebound on Ginobili's missed three-pointer.

"Too many opportunities at the end of the game. They had four attempts. It cost us," said Lakers head coach Phil Jackson.

Gasol had 19 points to lead the Lakers, while Bryant added 16 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, sharing the ball more in the face of criticism that he was hogging it too much.

Bryant found Gasol in the paint, setting up the play that led to his go-ahead foul shots. Earlier in the fourth, he passed up a three-point attempt for a sharp pass underneath. Bryant was just 5-of-18 from the field and the Spurs built an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter while he rested on the bench.

The reeling Lakers went 2-3 on a five-game homestand and are just 4-5 in their last nine contests overall. They will head out on a seven-game road trip that starts Saturday in New Orleans and also includes stops in Memphis, Boston, New York, Orlando, Charlotte and Cleveland.

"We had a horrible homestand here, so going out on the road might do us a little good," said Bryant.

The Spurs -- chased once again from their own building by the annual San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo -- will wrap up the long road trek with jaunts to Sacramento, Detroit, Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, New Jersey and Chicago.

McDyess' tip-in wasn't the only last-second bucket San Antonio scored in the game.

Gary Neal was coasting out of bounds at the baseline when he heaved up a desperation 15-footer as time was running out in the first quarter, hitting it to give the Spurs a 22-18 lead.

San Antonio led by as many as six and LA went ahead by as much as seven in a back-and-forth second quarter that ended with a 42-42 tie at halftime.

The Spurs led throughout the third quarter and carried a 66-63 edge into the fourth.

Earlier in the day, Duncan, Ginobili and Gasol were all named All-Star reserves for the Western Conference team...San Antonio has won three straight regular season meetings with the Lakers...The Spurs' road trip is 17 days long and encompasses 8,965 miles of travel...The Lakers lost despite out-shooting San Antonio 43-41 percent.
