Rockets work overtime to edge Grizzlies

Feb 6, 2011 - 7:47 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Luis Scola made a layup with 33.5 seconds left in overtime, lifting the Houston Rockets over the Memphis Grizzlies, 95-93.

Scola ended with 17 points and seven rebounds for the Rockets, who have won two in a row since a three-game skid. Kevin Martin chipped in with 31 points and six rebounds. Martin made all 15 of his foul shots.

"It was just a great win. Our guys really got in and out," Rockets head coach Rick Adelman said. "Both teams played hard. We had a great possession there at the end when the game was on the line to get the ball. Kyle (Lowry) made a great heads up play but it was just a great win for us."

Zach Randolph finished with 22 points and 17 boards for the Grizzlies, who had a season-high five-game winning streak snapped. Marc Gasol ended with 19 points. Rudy Gay tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which has lost 10 in a row in Houston.

Houston scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 73-71 lead on Courtney Lee's layup.

Gay's 13-foot jumper gave Memphis an 87-86 edge with 2:08 remaining. After each team missed a shot, Kyle Lowry made 1-of-2 from the foul line to tie the game with 1:22 to go.

Misses by Randolph and Martin gave the Grizzlies the ball back with 41.9 seconds left. Lowry blocked Gasol's layup attempt and called a timeout with 21.6 ticks remaining.

Scola was off the mark with a 22-foot jumper as time expired.

Randolph's turnaround bank shot with 55.1 ticks to go in overtime tied the contest at 93. Scola made the go-ahead layup at the other end.

Shane Battier blocked Gay's jumper, but Gay got his own rebound. Following another miss, Gasol came down with an offensive rebound. Mike Conley, who finished 2-of-16 from the field, missed a three-pointer with time winding down.

Memphis led 26-20 after one quarter of play and took a 51-43 margin into the break.

The Rockets started the third on a 10-2 flurry to deadlock the score at 53 with over 9 1/2 minutes left. The Grizzlies held a 71-67 lead heading to the fourth.

"Houston played great defense. Every time we got a rebound they made good defensive stops against us," Gay said. "Nothing is ever given to us and we let this one get away. In the second half, Houston came out with a different mentality and they attacked us. Between Scola (Luis) and Martin (Kevin) we just weren't able to shut the door."
