Lakers resume Grammy trip in Memphis

Feb 7, 2011 - 3:58 PM (Sports Network) - The two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers got their annual Grammy trip off to a good start and aim to stay in the win column tonight with a bout against the Memphis Grizzlies from FedEx Forum.

The Lakers received a pair of 30-point performances from Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol in Saturday's 101-95 triumph at New Orleans, as Gasol finished with a season-high 34 points and 10 rebounds and Bryant chipped in 32 points, nine boards and five assists. Bryant and Gasol scored 30 or more points in the same game for the first time since March 1, 2009 at Phoenix. LA is 5-1 when that occurs.

"We shot the ball well and you always have to have that kind of a game to win, especially on the road," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "The other thing we did was control the pace. We did not win the rebound battle; that was one of the other faults, but the thing is we took care of it."

Andrew Bynum added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers, who won for the fourth time in their last eight tries and improved to 16-8 away from Staples Center this season. Los Angeles will also visit the Celtics, Knicks, Magic, Bobcats and Cavaliers on the excursion, and committed just four turnovers against New Orleans (one shy of a franchise record).

LA held the Hornets to an opponent franchise-low four free throws (4-for-4) and zero points off the fast break.

The Grizzlies will put their four-game home winning streak on the line Monday night and hope to get back into the win column. They had a season-high five- game winning streak stopped with Saturday's 95-93 loss at Houston in overtime, as Luis Scola made a layup with 33.5 seconds left in OT to lead the way.

Zach Randolph finished with 22 points and 17 boards, while Marc Gasol tallied 19 points for Memphis, which had won eight of nine games coming in. Rudy Gay recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds in defeat. The Grizzlies have lost 10 straight trips to Space City.

"Houston played great defense. Every time we got a rebound they made good defensive stops against us," Gay said. "Nothing is ever given to us and we let this one get away. In the second half, Houston came out with a different mentality and they attacked us. Between Scola (Luis) and Martin (Kevin) we just weren't able to shut the door."

Memphis is 16-7 in the Volunteer State this season and is the only team to defeat the two-time defending champions twice this season (2-1). A win tonight at FedEx Forum will give the Grizzlies their first series victory over the Lakers since the 2005-06 campaign -- the last time they qualified for the playoffs.

The Lakers, however, are 10-5 in the past 15 meetings between the clubs.
