Conley, Grizzlies edge Bucks

Feb 12, 2011 - 7:57 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Mike Conley finished with 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds, as Memphis pulled out an 89-86 victory over Milwaukee at FedExForum.

Sam Young added 19 points with a career-high eight rebounds while Rudy Gay scored 14 with 10 boards for the Grizzlies, who have won two straight and seven of nine. Darrell Arthur added 12 points and eight boards for the victors.

It marked the 100th career win for Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins.

Corey Maggette paced the Bucks with 22 points. John Salmons added 18 with six assists and five boards, while Brandon Jennings scored 16 for Milwaukee, which lost for the sixth time in seven games. Andrew Bogut grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss.

Conley got the better of opposing guard Jennings, who he considers to be among the best in the league.

"I always look forward to playing some of the better point guards and I just wanted to come out aggressive and compete," Conley said.

Salmons' jumper with 2:58 remaining tied the game at 77-77. Just over a minute later, Tony Allen's slam and Conley's three-pointer gave Memphis a 82-77 lead.

The teams spent the next minute trading trips to the line, and after Allen's pair with 5.7 seconds remaining, the only shot the Bucks could manage was Jennings' three-pointer with 0.3 ticks left on the clock for the final margin.

Memphis held a 20-17 lead after the opening 12 minutes. Salmons paced the Bucks with 10 points on 3-of-5 from the field in the second quarter, however, a balanced Memphis attack expanded its lead to 45-40 entering the break.

After Jennings opened the second half with a three, Maggette connected on four-straight from long range to backbone a 20-4 Milwaukee run that stretched to the mid-point of the third.

Ersan Ilyasova's jumper at 4:04 held the Bucks' lead at 66-56, and Memphis ended the third on a 7-2 run, trimming their deficit to 68-63 at the end of three.

The Grizzles continued their streak to begin the fourth with Gay's turnaround jumper, and after Young's basket at 9:37 the lead was 68-67. Memphis took its first lead since the opening minutes of the third with a Gay finger roll at 7:03, and the Bucks tied the game three times down the stretch.

"We had our opportunities," said Milwaukee head coach Scott Skiles. "We played well enough to get a nice lead, and then we couldn't sustain it."

Milwaukee played without Larry Sanders (back spasms) and Chris Douglas-Roberts (illness)...Memphis began a three-game homestand that will feature visits for Denver and Philadelphia...Allen scored 10 points in a reserve role and Marc Gasol posted nine points with eight rebounds.
