Hawks resume road trip in MSG against Knicks
Feb 16, 2011 - 4:09 PM (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Hawks will resume their seven-game road trip under the bright lights of New York City, as they take on the Knicks tonight at historic Madison Square Garden. The Hawks kicked off the trek with a 94-79 victory in Detroit on Monday, as Josh Smith powered his way to 27 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Bibby was busy with 17 points, seven assists and six boards for Atlanta, which ended a two- game slide and won for the fourth time in six tries.
"It was a win we needed," Bibby said simply. "We did what we had to do."
Marvin Williams collected 15 points and All-Star Joe Johnson netted 14 in the win. The Hawks held the Pistons to just 28 points in the second half. After tonight's game in the Big Apple, the Hawks will begin their western portion of the trip against the Lakers, Suns, Warriors, Blazers and Nuggets.
Atlanta is 17-11 away from Philips Arena this season.
Meanwhile, the Knicks enter this evening's tilt with just two wins in their previous six games and will also host Milwaukee on the brief homestand.
In Saturday's 105-95 victory in New Jersey, Wilson Chandler scored 21 points in place of injured power forward Amare Stoudemire (toe) and Toney Douglas scored 19 off the bench for the Knicks, who ended a two-game slide and got 14 points from rookie Landry Fields.
New York seemed comfortable from beyond the arc and nailed 16-of-34 shots from three-point territory. Chandler, Douglas, Fields and Bill Walker all buried a trio of three-pointers. Raymond Felton got into the act with 13 points and 11 assists.
"Everybody stepped up. We played well, and that's why we got the win," said Felton.
Stoudemire did not play because of his ailing right big toe and is questionable for tonight. He's averaging 26.2 points this season. Forward Danilo Gallinari (knee) had seven points against the Nets and is listed as probable versus the Hawks.
Atlanta has won the first two meetings of the season against New York, which is an impressive 16-5 in the last 21 matchups between the teams at MSG.
