Kings take on Cavs in California's capital
Mar 16, 2011 - 3:01 PM (Sports Network) - Two of the NBA's worst teams continue playing out the string Wednesday when the Sacramento Kings play host to the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Kings, a Western Conference-worst 16-49, stopped a six-game slide on Monday when Marcus Thornton poured in a career-best 42 points in Sacramento's 129-119 victory over Golden State.
Thornton made 13-of-20 shots and 12-of-14 free throws in the scoring onslaught. Thornton, who averaged 7.8 points off the bench in New Orleans before being acquired at the trade deadline, is averaging 22.2 points in 10 games since joining the Kings. His previous career high was 37 points on February 23, 2010 versus Cleveland.
Samuel Dalembert also posted a career-high with 27 points to go along with 16 rebounds. DeMarcus Cousins donated 15 points and nine rebounds, while Francisco Garcia chipped in 13 points for the Kings.
"There's a historic rivalry between our two clubs and every time we meet up there is going to be energy on the court," said Sacramento head coach Paul Westphal.
The Cavs, meanwhile, lost their fourth straight on Sunday when Russell Westbrook scored 20 points and Kevin Durant posted 19, as Oklahoma City trounced Cleveland, 95-75, at Quicken Loan Arena.
Daniel Gibson had 13 points for the Cavaliers, who are an NBA-worst 12-53 on the season. Samardo Samuels had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while J.J. Hickson compiled eight points and 15 boards in the loss.
"On a more serious note, (I am) really starting to question what type of heart we have as a basketball team," Cavs head coach Byron Scott said. "If you are a competitor, no matter what the situation is or what the year has brought, you are going to come and compete every single night and we have not done that the last two games."
Point guard Baron Davis missed the Cavs' last two games to be with his family following the death of his grandmother and his status remains up in the air..
Cleveland, which has lost 27 of its last 28 on the road, had won eight straight over Sacramento before falling to the Kings, 107-104, in the Forest City back on Oct. 30.
