Knicks stroke 20 threes, maul Grizzlies
Mar 18, 2011 - 4:52 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Knicks made a franchise-best 20 three-pointers -- including nine from Toney Douglas -- to get a badly needed victory, 120-99, against the Memphis Grizzlies.Douglas matched a Knicks single-game record by shooting 9-of-12 from beyond the arc, finishing with 29 points and helping them snap a three-game slide. They had most recently been swept in a home-and-home set with Indiana.
"I had rhythm, and plus, my teammates, they created opportunities for me to have open jump shots," Douglas said. "Once you're in the zone, you feel like you can't miss."
Carmelo Anthony added 28 points for New York.
Mike Conley had 16 points and six assists to lead Memphis, which has dropped three of four.
"I feel we played pretty good help defense inside, everybody was rotating," said Grizzlies center Marc Gasol. "But I think the third and fourth effort wasn't there. They're a good shooting team, but they shot the lights out tonight."
It was a 29-29 game after a close first quarter, but Douglas came alive during the second to help New York start to take control. He played all 12 minutes and made 5-of-6 three-point tries.
Douglas drained one with about three minutes left in the quarter, giving the Knicks a 54-46 advantage, then hit his fifth with 56.9 seconds to play. That make put New York up by eight, and it held a 59-51 lead at the break.
Chauncey Billups was the Knicks' leading scorer during the third quarter, when he netted 12 of his 18 points. Douglas also stayed hot, making three more long-distance shots.
Two of them came in the final 34.3 seconds, after teammate Shawne Williams drained a three-pointer with 59.5 ticks left. The rapid-fire shots had New York up 92-74 moving to the fourth.
New York's lead never dipped into single digits in the final quarter, during which Douglas made his final three. It came with only 17.8 seconds left, sealing the Knicks' win and putting his name into the club's record book.
