Grizzlies resume playoff push with Clippers in town
Apr 5, 2011 - 3:10 PM (Sports Network) - The surging Memphis Grizzlies renew their playoff push tonight when they shoot for a season-high fifth straight win over the lottery bound LA Clippers. The Grizzlies earned their fourth straight win on Saturday when Zach Randolph scored 22 points and O.J. Mayo added 20 off the bench as the Grizz never trailed in a 106-89 victory over shorthanded Minnesota in the opener of a four-game homestand.
Memphis is now deadlocked with New Orleans for the final two spots in the Western Conference playoff hunt, three games clear of Houston with just five to play. The Grizzlies are also just a game south of Portland for the No. 6 seed.
"We're going to have to play the best teams (in the playoffs)," Grizzlies guard Sam Young said. "We just hope we get in a good situation where we can succeed."
Memphis, which is a solid 28-10 at FedEx Forum, will also face the Kings and the Hornets on its residency.
The Clippers, meanwhile, are coming off a big upset of Oklahoma City on Saturday in LA. Eric Gordon scored 18 points, including a go-ahead three- pointer in the final minute, in that one as the Clippers upended the Thunder, 98-92, at Staples Center.
Blake Griffin posted 26 points and 16 rebounds, while DeAndre Jordan added 12 and 10 for the Clippers, who had lost three of four coming in but eclipsed last season's win total with their 30th victory despite playing without center Chris Kaman (viral infection) and forward Ryan Gomes (sore knee).
"It feels great," Griffin said of the win. "We stepped it up defensively and were aggressive offensively."
Kaman may be able to return tonight but Gomes has been listed as doubtful.
LA, which is kicking off a four-game road trip tonight, is just 8-29 as the visitor this season. It has lost three straight to Memphis, including a pair of meetings this season.
