76ers sign first-round picks Young, Smith

Jul 11, 2007 - 5:21 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday signed first-round draft picks Thaddeus Young and Jason Smith.

The 12th overall pick, Young will make $3.165 million with a team option for a third year. Smith, the 20th selection, will receive $2.133 million for the next two seasons.

Young was an early entry in the NBA draft, opting to leave Georgia Tech after tying for the team lead in scoring with 14.4 points as a freshman. The 6-8 swingman also had 4.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 39 3-pointers in 31 games.

Originally drafted by the Miami Heat, Smith was acquired from the Sixers in a draft-day deal for the rights to Daequan Cook, a second-round pick in 2009 and cash considerations.

Smith, 21, led the Mountain West Conference in rebounding as a junior at Colorado State last season with 10.1 rebounds per game. The 7-foot forward also scored 16.8 points on 57.9 field goal percentage and blocked 1.6 shots in 30 games.
