Nets rookie G Marcus Williams has sprained wrist

Oct 17, 2006 - 10:40 PM EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) - New Jersey Nets rookie guard Marcus Williams suffered a sprained left wrist in practice Tuesday and is out indefinitely.

The 6-3 Williams was selected 22nd overall in the June draft. In three preseason games, he was averaging 15.0 points and 7.7 assists as the Nets began grooming him as the understudy to star point guard Jason Kidd.

The injury to Williams leaves the Nets short at point guard. Free agent signee Eddie House underwent knee surgery Monday.

Also on the preseason roster behind Kidd are veteran Jeff McInnis, who is not thought to be part of the team's plans this season, and Jay Williams, who is trying to come back from a near-fatal motorcycle accident two years ago.

Marcus Williams joins fellow first-round pick Josh Boone on the sidelines. Boone is expected to miss four to six months with a shoulder injury.
