Sixers hope to end slide versus Kings

Mar 12, 2014 - 2:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia 76ers will try to snap a 17-game losing streak Wednesday night when they welcome the Sacramento Kings to the Wells Fargo Center.

The Sixers haven't won since Jan. 29 in Boston and dropped 13 in a row as the host. It's the longest losing streak for the franchise since a 20-game slide during the 1972-73 season.

Eight of their last nine losses came by double figures, including Monday's 123-110 setback to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The Sixers battled on Monday, but ultimately fell again.

Philadelphia led 79-78 following a hook shot from Thaddeus Young with just under four minutes left in the third quarter, but that would be the last time the Sixers owned an advantage. New York proceeded to bridge the third and fourth quarters with a 26-8 run that J.R. Smith capped with a 3-pointer to give the Knicks a 104-87 lead.

New York led by as many as 21 in the final frame before the Sixers whittled it to as little as 12 in the closing minutes.

"What you saw tonight reflects our group," said Philadelphia coach Brett Brown. "For a majority of the game, they played well."

There was a bright spot for the Sixers in the loss, though, as Michael Carter- Williams became the first rookie in franchise history to record two triple- doubles in a season after amassing 23 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in the loss.

Tony Wroten also scored 23 points in the setback, while Young and James Anderson netted 18 and 17 points, respectively.

The Sixers begin a three-game homestand and will host the Indiana Pacers on Friday and Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

The Kings are on game five of a seven-game road trip and the results have not been good. Sacramento is 1-3 thus far with a win over the Milwaukee Bucks and losses to the Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons.

The setback to the Pistons came on Tuesday night. Sacramento fell, 99-89, and it was the third consecutive game the Kings failed to crack the 90-point plateau.

Rudy Gay paced the Kings with 20 points, Isaiah Thomas chipped in 19 points and eight assists and DeMarcus Cousins stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 14 boards and six blocks.

"Just a lot of small mistakes that we continued to do throughout the game," said Cousins. "Tough night for us."

The Sixers have won four straight over the Kings and 10 of the last 11 meetings. The Kings have dropped two in a row and four of five in Philadelphia.
