Davis dominates as Pelicans edge Celtics in OT
Mar 17, 2014 - 2:44 AM New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Davis posted 40 points and 21 rebounds to carry the New Orleans Pelicans past the Boston Celtics 121-120 in an overtime thriller on Sunday.Davis surpassed his career-highs in points and rebounds while also becoming the first player in Pelican history to record a 40-point/20-rebound game.
"I'm just trying to stay locked in. Every game, coach talks about being great. Anthony Morrow tells me, 'Be great every game.' I just go out there and do the things for us to win. As long as we get the win, that's all that matters to me," said Davis.
Tyreke Evans scored 26 and Eric Gordon added 19 points and eight assists for the Pelicans, who snapped a two-game skid.
Jeff Green had a team-high 39 points and grabbed six boards and Kris Humphries chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Celtics, who have lost six of their last eight. Jared Sullinger and Avery Bradley contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively, with Sullinger adding nine rebounds.
Green scored the first two of the extra period before the Pelicans fired back with seven straight -- five of which Evans netted -- to take a 119-114 lead with 1:34 left on the clock.
A Sullinger trey 18 brought the Celtics within two with just over a minute remaining. Evans then committed back-to-back turnovers, but Boston could not capitalize as Sullinger came up empty on two 3-point attempts.
Gordon made a pair from the line to stake New Orleans to a four-point cushion with 9.4 seconds to play. Green then took the ball hard to the rim and converted a 3-point play after Al-Farouq Aminu fouled him, but the Pelicans kept the ball away through the final 5.7 seconds.
Humphries nailed a turnaround buzzer-beater to force the extra session following a Davis jumper with 1.4 left in regulation that put the Pelicans ahead 112-110.
"I think he's unreal. You know, I came into the game January thinking, yeah, he's an All-Star. And I leave here after twice playing him saying, 'If there are 10 guys better in the league, I haven't seen them.' He's really a special player," said Boston coach Brad Stevens about Davis.
Aminu fouled Green with 4.9 seconds left in regulation on a 3-point attempt. Green connected on all three from the line before Davis and Humphries nailed their shots in the final two seconds.
The game was knotted at 84 apiece heading into the fourth before New Orleans took control with an 18-5 spurt. Boston responded with a 12-2 run to pull within 104-101.
Brian Roberts made a pair from the charity stripe with 6.4 on the clock, which preceded the aforementioned foul by Aminu on Green that led to the 3-point play.
Boston led by as many as nine through the third quarter until the Pelicans tied it up with 3:36 left.
