Spurs streak into matchup with Lakers

Mar 19, 2014 - 2:20 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs will carry their 10-game winning streak into the City of Angels Wednesday night when they meet the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center.

The Spurs haven't lost since Feb. 21 in Phoenix, but only two of the victories during this great run came outside of San Antonio. The Spurs begin a three- game western trek Wednesday and will visit the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors on the sojourn.

Last time out, the Spurs were balanced and brilliant in a 122-104 home drubbing of the Utah Jazz Sunday night.

Seven Spurs reached double figures, with Manu Ginobili's 21 points leading the way. Tony Parker went for 18 points and seven assists, while Tim Duncan donated 16 points, six rebounds and six assists in the rout.

Tiago Splitter had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli each needed just seven shots for 12 points in reserve roles. Kawhi Leonard was the final double-figure scorer with 11.

"Patty Mills just keeps on giving it to us," praised San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich. "Marco Belinelli comes off the bench with a lot of energy and basketball savvy."

San Antonio shot a season-high 62.8 percent (49-of-78) from the floor and 10- of-16 from distance.

The Spurs own the NBA's top record at 50-16 and to the shock of no one, also possess the league's best road mark at 24-8.

The Lakers haven't played since back-to-back road setbacks to the Oklahoma City Thunder and these Spurs on Thursday and Friday.

Against the Spurs, the Lakers fell, 119-85, for their fifth loss in the last six games.

LA trailed by 27 at the half in a game that turned quickly into a laugher. The Lakers led, 10-9, 5 1/2 minutes into the contest, but didn't make another field goal until the second quarter.

"The only disappointing thing was I thought heart-wise they grabbed our heart pretty quick and we just have to learn how to be able to compete and keep going," Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni said.

Pau Gasol posted an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Lakers. Jodie Meeks contributed 15 points and Kent Bazemore chipped in 10 off the bench.

Jordan Farmar injured his groin at practice on Monday and will be out the next two weeks.

The Lakers will host the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic and New York Knicks on this residency.

The Spurs have taken both of this season's matchups with LA after sweeping the Lakers in the first round of the postseason last spring. San Antonio is 5-2 in its last seven as the visitor in this series.
