Spurs shoot for 17th consecutive win with Pelicans in town

Mar 29, 2014 - 1:04 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs can match their franchise's longest winning streak with a win Saturday night at home against the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Spurs have won 16 in a row, which is the longest winning streak so far in the NBA this season. It is one off of the Spurs' record run from the 1995-96 season.

"We don't think about that," Marco Belinelli said of the Spurs streak. "We know where we want to be. It's good to win 16 games in a row but at the same time every day, every game we want to be a better team and try to be ready for the playoffs."

San Antonio's streak reached 16 games with a 133-102 demolishing of the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center Friday night.

Belinelli scored 27 points to the lead the Spurs. Tim Duncan netted 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Spurs, who snapped Denver's five-game home winning streak.

Tony Parker was limited to four points on 2-of-9 shooting, but Tiago Splitter filled the stat sheet with eight points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Kawhi Leonard scored 14 for the Spurs.

Danny Green sat out the victory due to right foot inflammation and his availability for Saturday is unknown.

The Pelicans are on a run of their own, just about one-third the length of San Antonio's. New Orleans has won five straight, including a perfect 4-0 homestand, which ended in a 102-95 victory over the Utah Jazz Friday night.

Tyreke Evans supplied 22 points and a career-high 15 assists. Anthony Morrow registered 20 points, while Al-Farouq Aminu added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Pelicans.

The Jazz only scored 38 points in the first half, but managed 57 over the final 24 minutes. The good news for the Pelicans was they scored 59 in final two quarters to seal the outcome.

"Different guys stepped up again and our defense was a lot better in the first (half) than the second for sure, but it was good enough to win the game," New Orleans head coach Monty Williams said.

The Pelicans knocked off some pretty high-caliber squads during this undefeated residency. New Orleans bested the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers before besting the Jazz.

New Orleans hosts the Sacramento Kings on Monday, then hits the road for three straight.

The Spurs have won all three meetings against the Pelicans this season and four straight over their Southwest Division foes. San Antonio has taken six in a row as the host in this series and 17 of the last 19.
