Hornets, Pelicans battle in Big Easy

(SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Davis is going to need some support if the New Orleans Pelicans want to be competitive this season.

Davis and the Pelicans will try to stop a two-game slide when they host the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday at Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans opened the season with a win over Orlando, then dropped back-to- back games against Dallas and Memphis. The Mavericks eked out a 109-104 win and the Grizzlies had an easier time with a 93-81 victory on Monday.

Davis, who leads New Orleans in points (23.7), rebounds (13.3) blocks (4.3) and steals (2.0), posted 14 points and eight rebounds. Tyreke Evans scored a game-high 21 points for the Pelicans.

New Orleans shot 33.7 percent and made only 4-of-24 3-pointers.

"It's just one of those nights where the shot wasn't falling, but we can't let that affect us," Evans said.

The Pelicans used to be known as the Hornets until changing names. Now, the Hornets are back in Charlotte, which used to be called the Bobcats.

Charlotte is 1-2 on the season and will try to avoid a third straight loss after falling to Memphis and New York. The Hornets, who opened the season with an overtime win versus Milwaukee, suffered a 96-93 setback to the Knicks on Sunday and couldn't contain Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony had 28 points and hit the eventual game-winning shot.

Al Jefferson paced the Hornets with 21 points, while Gary Neal scored 17 off the bench and Lance Stephenson came close to a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Kemba Walker scored 16 points in defeat.

Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist went up for a defensive rebound early in the first quarter, collided with Shane Larkin and fell to the floor, grasping at his right shoulder. He shook off the fall at first, but later would leave the game and not return. MKG is questionable Tuesday.

Charlotte and New Orleans split a pair of meetings last season. The Pelicans are 14-5 in the previous 19 matchups between the teams.
