Strong bench play leads Wizards past Magic
Nov 16, 2014 - 7:40 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kris Humphries, Otto Porter and Rasual Butler carried the Wizards late as the reserves combined for 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead Washington over the Orlando Magic, 98-93, on Saturday.Humphries finished with 16 points, Porter netted 13, Butler added 10 for the Wizards, who have won three in a row and improved to 7-2 for their best start since the 1974-75 season.
John Wall recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, while Nene added 16 points in the victory.
"When the first group is clicking, it helps when our second group is clicking," said Wall. "When were on the same page at the same time, we're a pretty tough team."
All five Magic starters scored in double figures, led by Tobias Harris' 19 points, but Orlando's two-game winning streak came in an end.
"We just have to hold everybody accountable," said Harris. "Whether it's defensively or offensively, we can't get away from what we do best and that's playing together."
Wall's 10 points in the first quarter paced the Wizards to a 24-17 lead, and Washington's bench totaled 16 points in the second as the hosts took a 48-38 cushion into the break.
The Magic were within a bucket several times in the third quarter, but a late Wall 3-pointer gave the hosts a 69-62 advantage.
Both sides shot the ball well to open the fourth, but the Magic never pulled closer than five.
Porter leaked behind the defense for an uncontested dunk and a 92-81 lead, and the Wizards held on over the final 3 1/2 minutes.
