Knicks use big second quarter to beat Nuggets

Nov 16, 2014 - 11:59 PM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the New York Knicks used a dominant second quarter to beat the Denver Nuggets, 109-93, on Sunday.

J.R. Smith also tallied 28 points for the Knicks, who snapped a seven-game skid.

New York outscored Denver by a 31-8 margin in the second stanza. The home team went 12-of-22 from the field in the period, while holding the Nuggets to 1- of-16 shooting.

"I thought in that second quarter we played great defense, buckling down, keeping them out of transition. It led to our offensive end," said Anthony.

Arron Afflalo ended with 18 points for the Nuggets, who fell to 2-7 on the young season. Ty Lawson had 17 points and nine assists.

The Knicks pulled away late in the second frame. Ahead 47-37, New York went on a 15-0 run. Anthony and Smith helped the home team take a 25-point lead. Lawson made a layup at the buzzer to make it 62-39 at the half.

"In the second quarter we were tentative offensively and we had a long drought with no penetration, turnovers missed free throws and they slowly continued to score," said Nuggets coach Brian Shaw.

Denver scored the final eight points of the third quarter to get within 86-74.

But the Nuggets never got closer than nine in the fourth.

The Knicks were without guard Iman Shumpert (hip) ... Denver guard Randy Foye (knee) missed the game ... New York won for the first time since Nov. 2 against Charlotte ... Kenneth Faried and Wilson Chandler had 16 and 11 points, respectively, for the Nuggets ... The Knicks shot 53.9 percent from the field.
