Ellis, Mavs outlast Bulls in 2-OT

Dec 3, 2014 - 7:21 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Monta Ellis scored a season-high 38 points and the Dallas Mavericks outlasted the Chicago Bulls, 132-129, in double- overtime on Tuesday.

Ellis, who shot 16-of-35 from the floor, sent the game to overtime with three free throws and essentially won it with a 3-pointer in the second overtime to help the Mavs win their fourth straight.

"We played good as a team," said Ellis. "I was just taking what the defense was giving me all night. Some went in, some didn't but they went in when they needed to."

Chandler Parsons deposited 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki netted 22 on 8-of-22 shooting in the win. Devin Harris added 20 points off the bench.

Pau Gasol led the Bulls with 29 points to go along with 14 rebounds, while Jimmy Butler dropped in 23 points and Mike Dunleavy chipped in with 20.

Derrick Rose, who banked in a 3 to tie the game as time expired in the first overtime, had 18 points and 10 assists.

Chicago had its two-game winning streak snapped in its return to United Center following a seven-game circus road trip.

"It would have felt better if we won the game," Gasol said of his night. "Unfortunately we lost."

Gasol scored six straight points for Chicago midway through the second overtime, the last of which tied the game at 127-127.

Joakim Noah turned a Parsons' turnover into a dunk at the other end that gave the Bulls the lead, but it was short lived, as Ellis converted a 3-pointer with 39.9 seconds left for a 130-129 margin. Parsons knocked down a pair of free throws after a Rose miss, then the latter was off the mark on his attempt at the tie as time expired.

Parsons broke a 116-116 deadlock with a 3-pointer at 1:20 of the first overtime. That margin remained when Noah grabbed an Ellis miss with 7.3 seconds to play.

Coming out of a timeout, Rose took a feed from Butler on the wing, drove to his left and banked in a one-handed 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to keep the game going.

Chicago worked its way back into the game midway through the fourth after trailing the entire half, and took the lead late courtesy of a 12-0 run that started midway through the fourth.

Trailing 96-90 lead with 6:37 remaining, Aaron Brooks hit a pair of free throws to start the surge. Brooks tied the game just over a minute later with a layup, then Gasol converted two jumpers before Butler capped the run with free throws for a 102-96 edge.

Ellis ended a 4:09 scoreless drought for Dallas with his dunk at 2:28. Rose followed a Nowitzki jumper with a 3-pointer for a 105-100 lead. Nowitzki fired in a 3 with under a minute left to again cut the deficit to two, but Ellis missed a jumper with 22.9 seconds left and Butler made 1-of-2 from the stripe to extend the margin.

Ellis drove up the floor for an uncontested layup with 4.9 seconds left, preceding Gasol's two free throws, and the speedy Dallas guard was then fouled in the act of shooting by Kirk Hinrich with 1.2 seconds on the clock. Ellis hit nothing but net on all three attempts to tie the game at 108-108, and Rose's 3 at the buzzer was long as the game headed to overtime.

The Bulls scored nine straight to begin the third quarter and turn a 12-point halftime deficit into a 59-56 game with 9:55 to play. Dunleavy converted a layup minutes later to tie the game, however, an 11-0 run for the Mavs later in the quarter helped them push the lead back to double digits. Dallas led 80-74 after three quarters.

Chicago led 26-25 after the first quarter, but Harris hit three of his six 3s during a 17-2 second-quarter surge that helped Dallas to a 59-47 lead at the break.

Game Notes

Chicago, which went 4-3 on its road trip, hadn't played at home since a Nov. 15 defeat against Indiana. The Bulls play in Charlotte on Wednesday, then return home for three games in the Windy City ... Chicago went 47-for-103 from the floor, while Dallas made 47 of its 102 shots ... Each team had 17 points off turnovers ... Chicago had a 50-36 edge in the paint and a 23-13 advantage on the fastbreak.
