Warrior Mentality: Golden State shoots for 11th straight win

Dec 4, 2014 - 3:36 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors are winning in all types of ways and can match a team record with a victory Thursday versus the New Orleans Pelicans at Oracle Arena.

The Warriors have won 10 in a row and are an NBA-best 15-2 this season. The record for consecutive wins in a season is 11 set from Dec. 29-Jan. 22, 1971-72.

Golden State needed late heroics from star Stephen Curry to stay in the win column and he buried the game-winning 3-pointer in the waning seconds of Tuesday's 98-97 victory versus the Orlando Magic. The Warriors needed a 3- pointer from Curry and two by Klay Thompson to even the score at 93-93.

With the Magic holding a 97-95 lead, Curry pulled up for a deep shot and the Warriors remained in the win column.

"From my view of what I was seeing, I just wanted to make a move and create some space," Curry said. "I wanted to go to my left and go down the middle, go to the basket and maybe get fouled. (Tobias Harris) kind of bit on the in-and- out move and I was able to get a rhythm shot."

Curry had 22 points and is fifth in the NBA in scoring with 23.7 points per game for the Warriors, whose 15-2 start is the best in team lore. Thompson finished with 20 points and Harrison Barnes added 14 and 12 rebounds.

The Warriors are 6-1 at home and have won four in a row there. They are third in scoring with 106.5 ppg and lead the league in field goal percentage (.485), opponents' field goal percentage (.401).

Golden State leads the NBA with 10 double-digit wins this season and is 11-0 when holding opponents below 100 points. It will play two in a row on the road against Chicago and Minnesota on Saturday and Monday.

Warriors forward Draymond Green (thumb) is probable Thursday and is posting an average of 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds. Harris was the only Warrior to appear in all 82 of the team's games (12 starts) in 2013-14.

The Pelicans will play the next three games on the west coast against the Warriors, Lakers and Clippers, and are 3-6 outside the big easy.

New Orleans ended a three-game losing streak with a 112-104 victory over Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant made his season debut because of foot fracture and scored 27 points in almost 30 minutes.

Anthony Davis posted 25 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, four assists and four blocks, while Tyreke Evans pumped in a season-high 30 points (15 in fourth quarter) on 14-of-24 shooting. Ryan Anderson recorded 23 points and 11 boards for the Pelicans, who shot 44.3 percent and scored 19 points off 17 OKC turnovers.

"We played extremely hard tonight," Pelicans head coach Monty Williams said. "That's something we haven't seen consistently."

Jrue Holiday recorded 16 points and 10 assists in the win.

The Pelicans hope to reach the 100-point mark in Oakland because they're 0-6 when failing to do so this season. They have an 8-0 mark when outshooting the opponent.

Davis will have to play big and Evans must continue to score in order to offset the tandem of Curry and Thompson.

Golden State won all three games against New Orleans last season and is riding a seven-game winning streak in this series. These two teams have split the last 12 games on the west coast.
