Mavs welcome Hawks to Big D

Dec 22, 2014 - 2:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Dallas Mavericks face a stiff test Monday versus the Atlanta Hawks at American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks have won three in a row and 10 of their last 13 games, and unveiled new point guard Rajon Rondo in Saturday's 99-93 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Acquired in a deal with Boston last week, Rondo handed out nine assists to go along with six points and seven rebounds.

Rondo made just 3-of-11 shots and had two steals. He needs eight steals for 1,000 in his career.

"He didn't shoot particularly well, but he did a lot of great things," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said of Rondo. "He did a lot of things that most guys in that position just don't do -- rebounding, making plays, things like that."

Monta Ellis scored a game-high 38 points on 15-of-23 shooting and Chandler Parsons added with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki and Devin Harris scored 13 points apiece for the Mavericks, who posted 25 points off 19 San Antonio turnovers and erased an 89-86 deficit with a 13-4 run.

Ellis scored 11 of Dallas' last 13 points.

Nowitzki needs 44 points to pass Elvin Hayes (27,313) for eighth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

The Mavs are 10-4 at home and first in the league with 109.7 points per game. They're second with a 47.9 field goal percentage.

Atlanta is riding a three-game winning streak and will close out a three-game road trip Monday night in Big D.

The Hawks are coming off a 104-97 victory over the Houston Rockets Saturday, as Kyle Korver buried 4-of-8 3-pointers en route to 22 points and both Paul Millsap and Al Horford added 14 points.

"They are a great team, they have great players and they have great spacing. We probably didn't adjust well enough (in the third)," said Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. "I thought the first half was really how we want to play on both ends."

Budenholzer's squad, which had a 52-40 lead at halftime and later pulled away with a 10-2 run in the final stanza, made 51.4 percent from the field and handed out 26 assists. The Hawks have recorded at least 20 assists in 24 games this season and are second in the NBA with 25.8 assists per game.

Dennis Schroder tallied eight points with six rebounds and six assists in place of Jeff Teague, who missed the game with a strained left hamstring. Teague is questionable Monday and leads the Hawks with 16.8 ppg.

Atlanta is averaging 103.0 ppg this season and has won 14 of its last 16 games. It will host the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks next.

The Hawks and Mavericks split two meetings a season ago and will meet against Feb. 25 at Philips Arena. The Hawks lead the all-time series 34-32 and are 15-18 in Big D. Dallas has won 12 of the past 15 encounters at home.
